TEETH WHITENING (BLEACHING)

With the age, teeth can be stained due to various reasons. The use of tobacco, tea, and coffee are the main reasons for the discoloration of teeth. Some medication or systemic diseases or trauma may also cause discoloration. Teeth whitening is a cosmetic procedure that aims to lighten darkened or discolored teeth.

It gives at least no harm to natural teeth and therefore we can say that it is the most conservative technique for making teeth look whiter and brighter.

Depending on the whitening technique, hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide are mainly used in teeth whitening.

There are 2 different techniques used for teeth whitening;

1- Professional At-Home Teeth Whitening

It must be done under a dentist's supervision and therefore requires a preoperative assessment. The whitening gel is applied to teeth using a custom-made vacuum-formed whitening tray.

The disadvantages of this technique are that it is totally reliant on patient compliance and it takes a longer time to whiten teeth compared to the office bleaching technique.

2- Office Bleaching

It is the fastest solution to make the teeth whiter. It is possible to get amazing results within 60 minutes. Office bleaching agents contain higher concentrations of whitening agents. Thus, they must be performed by an experienced dental professional to avoid injury to the gums.

In this technique, light is applied to teeth surfaces to accelerate the chemical reaction. This provides a much more quick and effective result.

Is Teeth Whitening Effective For All Teeth Discolorations?

As there are various reasons for teeth discoloration, teeth whitening is not effective for all discoloration.

Unlike tobacco, tea, or coffee stains, teeth whitening is not effective for whitening the stains due to the use of tetracycline, trauma, or hypo calcification. Patients who suffer from those should be examined by the dentist and other treatment options such as veneers or crowns should be considered.

Does Bleaching Give Harm to Teeth?

The answer is no. If it is supervised or done properly by a skilled dental professional, no harm will be given to your teeth.

Will This Bleach Colour Stay Forever?

This fact depends on the patients' oral hygiene regardless of the method of teeth whitening.

Proper oral hygiene should be maintained by regular teeth brushing, flossing, and rinsing. On average, the whitening effect lasts between 1-2 years.

Smoking, consuming food or drinks that cause stains on teeth reduce the lifetime of whitening effect.
