ROOT CANAL TREATMENTS (ENDODONTICS)
Treatment Duration: 1 Day
The root canal system is the name of the center of the tooth. Inside the root canal system, there is the dental pulp which contains the nerve and blood supply of the tooth. Infection of the dental pulp causes extreme pain. The reasons for this infection may be due to tooth decay, trauma, leaky fillings, or tooth crack. In all these situations bacterial penetration into the pulp causes an infection or inflammation.
Root canal treatment involves the removal of microorganisms by cleaning infected pulp, shaping and filling the root canal, and sealing it with a filling or crown in order to prevent or manage bacterial invasion within the root canal system. This treatment option saves the tooth and if done properly, this tooth can stay in the mouth for long years.

When Root Canal Treatment is Needed?
Dental x-rays are gold standard for diagnosis of a tooth that needs a root canal treatment. When the inflammation of the pulp starts, the nerves begin to die which in turn causes an increase in bacterial infection. This situation causes;- Pain when eating or drinking hot or cold food and liquids
- Loosening of tooth
- Difficulty while biting or chewing due to pain
- Colour change of the tooth (usually darker colours appear)
- Swelling of the gums around the infected tooth
- Sometimes pus ooze from the infected tooth
- In severe cases facial swelling
- If someone has at least one of these symptoms he/she may need a root canal treatment and this situation should be checked by a dentist immediately.

Is it a Painful Treatment?
Root canal treatment is done under local anesthesia like most other dental treatments which means there will be no pain at all.
Will I Have Pain After Root Canal Treatment?
It is important to follow the dentist's recommendations during the treatment. After the treatment has finished the tooth should not be painful although it is quite normal to have some sensitivity for a few days.
